Gentle Alarm

If you're anything like me (and I assume you are, since you too own an Android device), waking up in the morning is often an unpleasant experience. The loud, abrupt sound of an alarm going off may do well to get you to work on time, but it is often at the expense of feeling refreshed and ready for the day. Enter Gentle Alarm, which offers an easier, gentler way to get up in the morning.

Gentle Alarm's system is based on sleep-cycle theory, which in a nutshell states that as the night goes on, you drift between deeper and lighter sleep, roughly every 30 minutes toward the time you would wake up. If you are woken up during deeper sleep, you will feel groggy and tired; if woken up during lighter sleep, you will feel refreshed. Gentle Alarm taps into this idea in a deceptively simple way - it has the option of setting a pre-alarm, which plays at a much lower volume 30 minutes before the set alarm time. If you are in light sleep, this alarm will fully awaken you. However, if you are in deep sleep at this time, you will continue to sleep until the second, louder alarm plays at the set time. It may seem like a small change from your standard alarm, but it is remarkably effective.
